A developmental screening is a critical first step in identifying early signs of autism, behavioral issues, or cognitive delays. By seeking out this type of screening, families can gain a clearer understanding of their child’s needs and take proactive steps toward obtaining the right resources and support. Early intervention and tailored strategies can significantly
enhance a child's development, setting them on a path toward success in all areas of life.

Our free screening is designed for children 18 months up to 7 years old*

Autism Screening
Autism is a developmental disorder that affects communication, behavior, and social interactions.
During the screening, we will look for signs such as:

  • Difficulty with eye contact or understanding non-verbal cues

  • Limited interest in social interactions

  • Repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand-flapping, spinning objects)

  • Restricted interests or obsessive focus on certain topics

  • Delays or differences in speech and language development

Early identification of ASD can lead to more effective interventions, which can significantly improve a child’s quality of life. If screening indicates potential signs of autism, the family will be provided with information about diagnostic evaluations and local resources, such as speech therapy, behavioral therapy, and social skills training.

Behavioral Screening
Behavioral screening focuses on a child’s actions and emotional responses, helping identify patterns that might indicate delays or disorders such as ADHD, anxiety, or oppositional defiant disorder. Some behaviors may include:

  • Inability to focus or follow instructions

  • Frequent outbursts or tantrums that seem disproportionate

  • Difficulty adjusting to new routines or environments

  • Excessive impulsivity or aggression

Screening helps distinguish between typical behavioral challenges and more serious concerns that may require professional intervention. If certain behaviors are identified, families will receive guidance on positive reinforcement strategies and may be referred to child psychologists or behavioral therapists who specialize in managing and supporting children’s emotional and behavioral needs.

Cognitive Skills Screening
Cognitive screening evaluates a child’s intellectual abilities, including problem-solving skills, language comprehension, and memory. This screening assesses whether the child is meeting expected developmental milestones for their age group, such as:

  • Ability to recognize shapes, colors, and letters

  • Receptive and expressive language development

  • Understanding of basic concepts like counting, time, or cause and effect

  • Attention span and ability to follow simple instructions

Cognitive concerns might suggest the need for further testing, such as a psychoeducational evaluation, which can determine if a child has learning disabilities or developmental delays. Early identification can help ensure that children receive the right educational support to reach their full potential.

How Families Can Benefit:
For families, a developmental screening serves as an early warning system, offering an opportunity to address any concerns before they become more pronounced. If a child shows any delays or issues in autism, behavior, or cognitive development, the screening process will help families:

  • Understand whether further diagnostic testing is necessary

  • Gain access to local resources, including specialized healthcare providers, therapists, and support groups

  • Find appropriate early intervention programs that can make a significant difference in a child’s development

  • Learn about strategies and techniques to support the child at home and school

  • Get advice on navigating healthcare and educational systems to ensure the child receives the proper support

  • Get peace of mind knowing that many places have lengthy waitlists to be seen
